Abiotic Factors

Temperature

The GBR has water temperatures of about 30℃/85℉ during the summer throughout the central and northern areas. 24℃/75℉ in winter and cooler water off the Sunshine Coast.

Sunlight

Reefs grow best in shallow, sunny, clear water. It is vital for the water to be clear and shallow so that they can obtain a lot of sunlight.

Ocean currents

Ocean currents and waves are like the life blood of coral reef ecosystems: they bring nutrients, prey, and new recruits, and may carry away or dilute particles and harmful chemical compounds. Currents are the medium connecting reefs with estuaries, channels, mangrove forests and seagrass beds inshore, and with the deeper oceans that invariably lie offshore of  the reef.

Who are we?

We are an activist group aiming for a cleaner, and healthier reef for the organisms inhabiting it and overall improvement of the water quality.

Why do we exist?

Pollution Prevention Queensland is an initiative created to raise awareness about the issues the Great Barrier Reef is facing regarding pollutants, and what is in the power of civilans to help prevent the decline of many species found in the reef.
